Home Cares HIV/AIDS Project
Most Outstanding Service Project Award
Zonta International District 17 BIENNIUM 2004-2006
Home Cares In northern Thailand, HIV infection has often resulted in the illness of women who are wives and mothers. In a very special way, and particularly among poor families who cannot afford hospital care, this places the entire stability of the family at risk. Care-giving responsibilities in these situations often fall to the grandparents, and particularly grandmothers. Although Thai grandmothers have always had important roles in the care and up-bringing of children, this unexpected burden in their later years is a heavy one. This is particularly true if they have no previous knowledge of HIV/AIDS or of basic home care techniques such as precautions. ZICC has begun an activity aimed at improving the ability of grandparents to function as home care givers and provide support to them as such.
Each full day training program costs Baht 15,000 which pays for meals, reading material, and transportation. Until August 2004, over 37 workshops have been carried out in northern Thailand through Zonta assistance with co-operation by the Chiang Mai Health Dept. and the Thai Red Cross.
